How Did Valentine's Day Originate?

Have you ever wondered how the holiday “Valentines Day” originated? The holiday got its name from a saint named Valentine. Many believe he was a priest from Rome. At the time, the Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. St. Valentine didn’t think this was fair so he secretly arranged weddings. When Claudius found out, he threw Valentine in jail and was sentenced to death. While in jail, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter. When he was taken to be killed on February 14, he sent her a love letter signed "from your Valentine".

It is thought to have originated from a Roman festival called Lupercalia. As part of the celebration, boys would draw names of girls from a box. Then they would be boyfriend and girlfriend and sometimes would get married. Later on, the church made it a Christian celebration to remember St. Valentine.

Now, February the 14 is a day where people show their love and affection for each other. Many show it by giving and receiving gifts. People also give jewelry such as, gold necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc...
